Ashlea & ASHY!

Hello!

On this week’s episode of Welcome to the Gig, I was honoured to be able to have the lovely ASHY Batchelor in the studio to talk about her latest single, Mirror, how she has changed since becoming a musician and what her next projects are, among other things! ASHY is an absolute boss lady and is quite the inspiration in my opinion.

Thank you so much ASHY for coming into the studio for a chat and for sending out all of the good vibes that will make a long lasting impression on others!

Songs on this episode:

  • ‘Mirror’ by ASHY and Vallé

  • ‘Pineapple Pizza’ by CHAII

  • D.N.L (Don’t Need Love) by ASHY

I am currently looking at getting some more guests in studio - however, this is limited to 3 guests in studio with me (vaccine pass required for entry) due to current covid restrictions (this is under alert level red). If you’re in Christchurch or you’re going to be in Christchurch soon, make sure to get in touch (Instagram or Email) to arrange a little chat. At this stage, I am still trying to grasp my bearings with live radio, however, am keen to chat to national artists on the show, too. I will be doing zoom or phone chats for the show eventually! At this stage, I am more than happy to do an interview or feature for the blog if that’s what you would prefer!

Episode 12: How Music Helps with our Happiness

Hello!

Thanks for listening to my podcast, this one is a really important one for a couple of reasons: it is the first show of 2022 and it is based around how music can help our mental health.

I am a big advocate for good mental health and as a sufferer of anxiety, I find solace in music - a powerful tool to use when things are rough.

The songs featured were picked by a couple friends and myself to help pick you up on those darker days.

Hope you enjoy the episode and come back in two weeks for the next one!

Songs featured on this episode:

Open Up by Muroki

Dandelions by There’s a Tuesday

Make Believe by Somebody Do Something

Valencia by Marlin’s Dreaming

Episode 11: Smells like Summer, ft. Jordy Mills

You may not recognise this face, but you will now know her voice! This is one of my best friends, Jordy, who gladly came on the show this week. I had a few technical difficulties, so my apologies for this. Hopefully the first show of 2022 will offer some redemption!

The theme for this week was Smells like Summer - simply put, songs that remind us of gig season and Summer!

Songs featured:

  • Fiji Baby by Goodshirt

  • Get Away by Summer Thieves

  • Always on my Mind by Tiki Taane

  • Old News by Mitch James

Thank you so very much Jordy for popping in and filling up the show with your awesome chats! Appreciate you a lot and I hope you had heaps of fun, regardless of all the technical errors.

I’ll be back on the 12th January at 8pm, feeling a bit fresher (hopefully) with some awesome stories and new music.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Episode 10: Songs that didn’t make my Wrapped 2021 (but should have)

This week, I wanted to go with a fun theme. I thought… Hmm, what has been popular the past while and it came to mind: Spotify Wrapped 2021. So, here it is. A podcast dedicated to some songs that didn’t (with the exception of one song) make it onto my top Wrapped 2021.

Songs featured on this episode:

  • Angel by Lunar Intruder

  • Eve by Alba Rose

  • Control by Park Rd

  • Can You Hear Me Now by Little Sunday

I hope you all have an amazing Christmas and make sure to listen in to Welcome to the Gig again on the 29th December at 8pm! (Got asked to do another show between my usual two weeks - that’s exciting).

If there was an endless amount of airtime, every song of 2021 would be on this podcast. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. There were so many amazing songs released this year and it was hard to choose. These were just a couple of good ones!

Make sure to check out Welcome to the Gig on Instagram and also Facebook.

Much love!

PS: here is the soppy post if you wanted to read it, haha -

Happy (early!) Christmas & New Year from Welcome to the Gig! (Don't worry, this won't be the last post of 2021, but wanted to post this early before the craziness arrives)

Buckle in, this will be long! 2021 hasn't been the most ideal year, however, Welcome to the Gig was born this year. Just a girl with an idea to boost those around the country with a website, turned into something much greater than JUST a blog. It turned into many wonderful opportunities, a radio show, a chance to meet and talk to new people and make some new pals. I would like to mention some special supporters who have been so encouraging and kind on this crazy journey! Mum, Jordy, Sarah, The LAB Music Show, Mehrt from Mild Orange, Lunar Intruder, Carleen - a few who have really been the biggest WTTG supporters!! To Pia and the team Plains FM: Thank you. Thank you for giving this inexperienced broadcaster a shot at having a radio show (still mind blown!) and for being exceptionally kind and patient while I've been learning. What a wonderful team!! To Thomas, Matt, Baily, Liam & Lauren for being on the podcast, I enjoyed having you on so much! To The Raddlers, Lunar Intruder, Minnie from There’s A Tuesday, Big Sima (Lucas), Mehrt from Mild Orange, Jaz Paterson, PARK RD, SOJØURN for allowing me to interview you with some silly questions and for taking the time out to be interviewed by this awkward human. I loved meeting/zooming with you all! To those artists who have approached me for a write-up (unbelievable omg), thank you for sharing your beautiful music! To those who have read the blog, listened to the podcast and actually enjoyed what I do, words are not enough to explain how much your support means. That is the best gift in the entire world bottom line. I bloody love every single one of you SO MUCH and cannot wait for more Welcome to the Gig in 2022!! Much love always, Ashlea (Ash/WTTG) xx

Episode 9: Ft. Lovely Loveta (Lauren Marshall)

Oh, hey! How’s it going? Can you actually believe we are almost at double digits of the Welcome to the Gig podcast? That’s massive.

This week, I was lucky enough to have yet another special guest in studio, the loveliest of lovely humans, Lauren Marshall (AKA Loveta!)

It was such an honour and privilege to have Lauren in studio - we chatted about her new single with Wulfie, Love Won’t Run Away (review here), what she has coming up and how 2021 has been for her. You can listen to the podcast above!

Songs featured on this episode:

A HUGE thank you to Lauren for taking the time out of her busy schedule to come in and have a chat with me - it was so, so awesome to meet you, truly grateful!

Make sure to follow along with Lauren below and check out her upcoming EP next year!

Episode 8: Fun with Liam and Baily! (First Live EVER!)

Hey there! Tonight was my first night ever going live in studio with some special pals/guests - Liam Wahrlich and Baily Lelieveld from The LAB Music Show and local band The Raddlers (also Bayleaf and MIM!). We talked about upcoming projects, took a leaf from their book with Table Topics and just had some general chats about things.

Thankful these two could come in studio and be there for my first live show! I genuinely hope you guys enjoy the episode and tune in on the 8th December for the next one.

Episode 7: On the Radar

Good evening and thank you for coming back to show your support for Welcome to the Gig! I think you’re epic and appreciate you!

This week is going with the theme of the new segment on the blog - On the Radar! I decided to introduce it onto the podcast as well for this show as it was tricky to think of ideas for this one.

Songs featured on this episode are:

  • This Kinda Day by Mild Orange - this song came about when I didn’t know it was needed the most and speaks many volumes. If you’ve read the interview with Mehrt from MO, you will realise how obsessed I am with this track.

  • More by SOJØURN - how can you NOT love this song?! It’s funky, fun, wonderful. All bliss, great for road trips and having a few cold ones with friends.

  • All at Once by Mackensie Grace - this song has been stuck in my head for a few days now and I love it. Favourite female up-and-comer currently.

  • Lady by Mako Road - many memories attached to this song for me. It reminds me of Summer prior to covid and driving up to Blenheim to see the guys in January 2020. Best. Gig. Ever.

I specifically chose these songs as they are current favourites and ones that are on my personal musical radar and make me feel good. This episode was a lot of fun to record, so hopefully you enjoy it!

If you are based in Christchurch, I am looking for a few guest musicians to come on in studio to be on the show between now and Christmas. Please see the information for social media and email at the top of the website to get in contact!

Episode 6: Girl Power in the NZ Music Scene

Hello! This week on the podcast, I decided that we needed a bit more girl power on the show, so that’s exactly what this episode is all about - females in the New Zealand music scene. Featuring songs from Jaz Paterson, Molly Payton, Len Blake and Sophie Gibson, find out a bit more about these artists and have a listen to their incredible voices.

The next show will be on at 8pm, 10th November on Plains FM, 96.9 or live on the website here.

Any ideas for the show? Any Kiwi requests? Social media and email links are at the top of the blog. Thank you for listening and stay in touch!

-

Thank you to the wonderful team at Plains FM for this incredible opportunity to create a podcast around Kiwi music and for teaching me many things in terms of producing and putting together a show! It has been a real honour so far to do this and I hope to continue this journey of podcasting for a while yet.
