New Music Review - ‘King of the Reef’ by Flaxxies

Depicting what Flaxxies are all about - a fun single, ready for your summer vibes playlist. Dropping on all music platforms at midnight!

King of the Reef is about to be the hottest drop of your December because Flaxxies are back with their punchy-surf music, rearing to get up again with this upbeat, fun and ready-to-go song, which is going to be dropping at midnight tonight, so get on your surfboard and hit those waves with a good tune!

Flaxxies never fail to impress with their chilled tunes and somehow always seem to turn it up 5 million notches when they chuck us a new single, how good! If you’ve been to one of their gigs before, you may recognise this energised single as it always tends to pop off with the audience when it is performed and is finally here for you to listen to whenever you please.

King of the Reef brings a feeling of being able to pop down to the beach (for some reason, I feel this would be appropriate on a road trip to Raglan or to their favourite place, the Coromandel) with the windows down, the music up and a few iced drinks in the chilly bin that is sitting on your mates lap while bumping this absolute tune. At the beginning, they bring it in with a bit of synth-indie-rock, which is the best to way describe it, adding a little more pizazz and excitement to the tune you’re about to be taken in by.

For me, the highlight of the song is just how light it is and easy to listen to. The bass really drives through to make some epic movement in this jam.

King of the Reef seems the most Flaxxies-like song, however in saying that, I know that all of their music is their own, it’s just that one is a standout track that truly announces their names from the rooftop, like “hey, we’re Flaxxies and we are here to let you know that we are all kings of the reef! Just listen to our music and you will find this out!” It’s full of each member of the bands personalities. (It’s also a fun wee thing that they chucked the band name within the tune, also.)

Flaxxies have big ambitions and it’s easy for listeners to hear what they pour into their music for these to come true. From getting to know them this year, it’s easy to see that their hearts are in this for the long haul, especially with this release that is catered specifically to themselves and who they are going to become, they’re looking to be heard and they achieve this greatly in King of the Reef.

Here at Welcome to the Gig, I am (clearly) a big fan of Flaxxies and am always super eager to hear what they have coming up next because I know that it will always be musically pleasing and a fun vibe to sing/dance along to. These five legends are proof that even though they may be young, that doesn’t stop them from producing and creating high end, good quality music, which is thoroughly appreciated and always enjoyed.
