Gig Review: This Town Ain’t Big Enough Tour at Wunderbar, 12/1/2023
Wellington-based Revulva are currently hitting up stages across the country with their This Town Ain’t Big Enough tour that is crashing the minds of everyone who gets to go along to experience their greatness.
On Thursday, 12th January, I got the chance to see Revulva live for the first time at Lyttelton’s local Wunderbar and it was an absolute delightfully unique evening for all.
Hannah Everingham and Sam White opened the evening up with some harmonies through sought after vocals, alongside whimsical movements on both electric and acoustic guitars that ensured everyone was silent, listening to these two perform together. Hannah and Sam are a perfectly paired duo, like the sun rising out of the clouds on a previously unpleasant day. They both held these calming moments down with their musical abilities which was a really light moment during their set.
Revulva soon made the stage their own after their fantastic opening acts and even after having had quite a rough day, the eight performers gave everything they could have given and more to the audience in that room. Their blissfully aware attitudes of expanding on topics that may be considered to be taboo to talk about in public made the laughter erupt and the music flow with special generosity of their uniqueness.
Rolling in with this heavily epic jazz-pop sound, the electricity that Revulva exposed was unwavering, honest and exceptionally on the raw side to some degree.
A bucket full of instruments with their owners graced the stage, allowing Revulva to give a piece of their own to Lyttelton, an extraordinary sense of deliciousness from the get-go.
Revulva set off this spicy, roasted set that is engrained in minds across all attendees, even nearly two weeks on.
A diversely epic night for all.
