Gig Review: MADELINE. at Darkroom, 3/11/2022

It was power hour for MADELINE. who took the crowd by storm on Thursday night at Darkroom with her Consume single release party. All photos taken by me on the Sony A6000.

Taking Christchurch central by storm on Thursday night was our very own, exceptionally talented Madeline Berry (AKA MADELINE.) who took off the roof on Darkroom and made it her own for a short, but sweet, six-song set.

In celebration of her first debut single release of Consume (review here), MADELINE. put on the Consume Release Party to show everyone what she had to offer, an evening that holds all of the good memories you could think of.

The first time on stage for quite a while, MADELINE. drew the crowd in with her infectious vocals that lit up the space, along with her good friend and bandmate from Auckland, Jessie Booth who flew down for the special occasion and helped MADELINE. pull off the show.

Jessie and MADELINE. make a magical team!

MADELINE. and Jessie working together is something not to be washed over - these two are so dynamic when up on stage performing and I was taken to a calm place seeing them enjoying themselves, getting to do what they both love again after a while off.

Delivering the lushest set and the most graceful stage presence, it was quite the fun time with MADELINE. introducing a majority of the songs with a backstory of why they were written - I am personally someone who loves hearing the “why” of songs, so this really touched on something to make the show even more enjoyable than it already was from the get-go.

The first song was about a bar in Australia, Illawarra, that MADELINE. met a girl who was ditched by her boyfriend at. A pretty uncool situation, however, it sounds like MADELINE. and the other girl went on to have a kickass time, regardless of the less-than-ideal situation. Girl empowerment! MADELINE. is fierce in that aspect and it’s easy to see how she can come to make such strong friendships through her kindness and I highly admire that.

Other songs included Prosperine (an original which I believe is from MADELINE. and Jessie’s band, She Loves You), Venice, High (about the feeling of sleeping with someone you’ve wanted to for ages), a cover of Go with the Flow and of course, the song of the evening, Consume, were performed with such grace and intensity, leaving the crowd near speechless.

The energy and positivity bought by supportive loved ones that filled the room with this blissful vibe that made Thursday’s gig one that was quite unforgettable. MADELINE. certainly puts on this wonderful show and her music is not one to sleep on.

The night ended with the official music video for Consume before it officially released the next day, with everyone cheering and singing along. The video is truly spectacular, as you can see below!

It will be great to see MADELINE.’s next steps within her solo career - with an EP in the works, the horizon is exceptionally bright.
